Old Greenwich is the oldest of the seven hamlets comprising the town of Greenwich. This is where it all began in 1640 when an English man by the name of Jeffery Ferris purchased the area now called Old Greenwich from the Siwanoy Indians for twenty five coats.
The Village of Old Greenwich grew from a humble farming area to an exclusive summer beach resort then into the charming family oriented village it is today.
Old Greenwich is home to the largest and most popular beach and park in Greenwich. Tods point, (or ‘the point’ as the locals call it), is 170+ acres of sandy beach, small boat marina, sailing school, park lands with hiking and jogging trails and a number of picnic areas. The beautiful views extend from the Long Island shoreline down to the skyscrapers of Manhattan NY. Summer finds it hosting kite flying contests, sand castle contest and children’s summer camps where they can learn to sail or kayak on Long Island Sound. Residents can also rent sail boats or kayaks for the day to enjoy the waters of the Sound.
Old Greenwich is also home to Binney Park, which contains expansive public playing fields for soccer and baseball, public tennis courts, walking paths and one of the towns annual 4th of July fire works displays. Its central pond hosts ice skaters in the winter, model sailboats in the summer and wild life year around. Binney Park is a prime spot for prom and wedding photos capturing the weeping willows and quaint stone bridges as backgrounds. Dorothy Hamil, the gold medal Olympic skater, started skating as a small child on Binney Pond.
The annual Old Greenwich Memorial Day parade of local veterans, school bands, kids sports teams, fire departments, local clubs and community groups up Sound Beach Ave. thru the Old Greenwich village to the Binney park Veterans Memorial, reminds one of a Norman Rockwell painting. Especially touching is the closing service with the annual names reading of the Old Greenwich area residents that gave their lives for our country starting with the Revolutionary War.
