COS COB, Connecticut
The Greenwich hamlet of CosCob, originally known as Mianus after a local Siwanoy Chief, was originally settled by the Dutch. A sea wall built on the Minaus River as it emptied into Long Island sound allowed Cos Cob to develop into a major port for shipments of local Greenwich produce to New York City.
From its farming and shipping roots, Cos Cob developed into an artist colony. In the early 19th century students from the New York Art Students League studied in the area under John Henry Twachtman and Julian Alden Weir. Other members of the Cos Cob Art Colony included Childe Hassam, Leonard Ochtman and Theodore Robinson. The arts colony also played host to Eugene ONeill , Willa Cather and Anya Seton.
In 1900 Ernest Thompson Seton moved to Cos Cob. In 1902 he stared the Woodcraft Indians, a "Tribe" of 12 boys from Cos Cob School which grew into the Boy Scouts of America.
The Ernest Thompson Seton Scout Reservation, the large Boy Scout camp in Greenwich, was named in honor of Mr. Seton and has been developed to preserve much of its 249 acres in a natural state for the enjoyment of scouts and the town.
